Heat the olive oil in a large deep frying pan. Add the garlic, onion, carrot and celery and stir for 5 minutes over low heat until the vegetables are golden.
Increase the heat, add the beef and brown well, stirring and breaking up any lumps with a fork as it cooks. Add the stock, wine, tomatoes, sugar and parsley.

Update :
Watery so I cooked it for longer to boil some off, added a bit of cornflour to thicken. Rather bland so I added basil, tomato puree, oregano, a little ground clove, plenty of pepper and gave it another half hour. Result ok but not the original recipe.

Hi Rob, it looks like a pretty standard recipe to me, except no tomato paste or herbs. What was the issue with the outcome? Too bland, too watery? Would love to hear so it might help others in the future. :)
