  • About

The wine regions in this western part of Hungary, between the Austrian border and the Danube, are increasingly bringing their own marked characteristics to the wines. The area is heavily influenced by the waters of Lake Balaton, the neusiedlersee in Austria, and the Danube itself. Wines from this area may be labelled pgi DunĂĄntĂșl.

Traditionally the northern side of Lake Balaton was the vine-growing area, with the famous Badacsony Hill on the volcanic slopes at the south-west end. The surface area of water in the lake has a considerable ameliorating effect on the mesoclimate (see topography) and the wines tend to be full and powerful. This is home to the ancient KĂ©knyelƱ, but also makes fine Pinot Gris (SzĂŒrkebarĂĄt), as well as Olaszrizling. BalatonfĂŒred-Csopak also lies on the northern shore, on sandstone, slate, and marl, and produces a range of western varieties and Olaszrizling. BalatonfĂŒred-Csopak is known for its Olaszrizling and the Csopak KĂłdex association has been formed to regulate and recognize the quality of the best examples.
