The catalogues which follow include almost all the species of sea fish, crustaceans, molluscs and miscellaneous seafoods which are both indigenous to the North Atlantic region, as I have defined it, and likely to be found in fish markets or restaurants. I say ‘almost’ because I have left out all marine mammals, for reasons explained.

I have listed some species which are rarely or never marketed, but which readers may catch or gather for themselves. With an eye to the future, I have also included some species which are not marketed at present, but may be before long. The blue whiting and the grenadier are examples.
