Cream together the butter and sugar. Beat in the egg. Add the vanilla. Combine the flour and salt, and stir into the creamed mixture.
Wrap the dough in aluminum foil and chill for three to four hours.
Preheat oven to moderate (350°F.).
Roll out the dough to one-eighth-inch thickness. Cut into shapes. Place on ungreased cookie sheets. Bake for eight to ten minutes, or until lightly browned.
Cool on a rack. When cool, frost with royal icing, using a decorator tube and bag or a spatula.
