My dad is not much of a drinker. I’ve only ever seen him drink beer – in the tiniest of cans, the ones you get on planes. He never went to the pub or a bar as far as I am aware, and we didn’t really eat in restaurants ’til I was in my twenties, and even then he rarely came let alone had a drink. My English husband Tone, on the other hand, is a very social drinker. He loves a beer or two. A memory that always makes me laugh is the first time my husband – then fiancé – came to visit me at my parental home and Dad asked if he wanted a beer. Of course, my husband said yes and out came the little tins – which my husband necked in one go like a shot, not realising he was supposed to sip them. Funnier still was the snack that accompanied the beer: cubes of cheese sprinkled over with a little chilli powder and cumin. Left to his own devices this is what my dad would snack on. Thankfully Gujarati women are the best at creating little nibbles to have with beer. Note – I’m not a fan of beer and can attest that all of these snacks work well with a glass of wine too.
