The busy day comes to a deadening halt, shutters are pulled down on shops, and office workers break free from their stations. All is put on hold as people sit together to enjoy this simple pleasure: the sharing of food. No one in Pakistan would question the momentous nature of this daily occurrence. Work can wait, lunch comes first.
In fact, if there is one unifying feature that crosses all boundaries of the disparate Pakistani people, it would be the love of breaking bread and sharing rice. There’s an understanding that all men are equal when it comes to this experience, whether it be mopping up a daal with chapati, dipping naan in a bowl of haleem or tucking into a biryani lunch.
