  • About
December has always been a highly anticipated time of year, at least in my mind, because its arrival marks the start of holiday festivities and gatherings with friends and family. Whether it’s the beginning of a holiday vacation, the twinkling of fairy lights wrapped around the lampposts, or the front porches that bring warmth as the days grow darker, I cherish it all.

Since my sister and I left home for opposite ends of the world, it is in December that our family comes together to celebrate. Christmastime in Poland always includes a walk through the Old Town, hot mugs of mulled wine or hot chocolate, and enjoyment of the spectacle of lights. In the Netherlands, I’ve been fortunate to experience some of the Sinterklaas traditions with friends. On Sinterklaas, we give each other chocolate letters, pepernoten, and arrange “Secret Santas” where we write poems and exchange small gifts. Last year, I was invited to a Gourmetten dinner. We sat around a table for hours and grilled tiny portions of meat and veggies. I cherish these memories and look forward to making new ones each year.
