Anne Mendelson is a freelance writer specializing in food-related subjects. A collaborator on several cookbooks and a contributor to such major reference works as The Oxford Encyclopedia of Food and Drink in America (2004), she has held major scholarly fellowships and was the winner of the 2007 Sophie Coe Prize in food history. She is the author of Stand Facing the Stove (Henry Holt 1996; a biography of the authors of Joy of Cooking), Milk: The Surprising Story of Milk Through the Ages (Knopf 2008; a short history and recipe-collection), and Chow Chop Suey: Food and the Chinese American Journey (Columbia University Press 2016).
