In India, breakfasts are worth getting out of bed for. The options are limitless and what you will be given depends on where you are in the country. In the north, Indian flatbreads such as paratha and chapati are served with light vegetable dishes, or you may get pudla — chickpea pancakes — with some chutney. Batura is another northern classic to be enjoyed with chole. Head further south and the breakfasts are more rice or semolina based. You will come across appam, dosa, pongal, upma and medu vada. Usually these are served with chutney or a small bowl of sambar on the side.
