Sunday mornings are much the same in many South African homes – men and boys in formal jackets and shoes; women and girls in dresses and heels, brows on fleek; enticing aromas coming from the kitchen as Mama adds final touches to the Sunday lunch before everyone leaves for church. Mama’s been up since the crack of dawn preparing the meal because who knows what time church will end. The pastor says his sermon will be short this week, but we all know it never is. Two hours later, stomachs begin to rumble, and there’s still praise and worship to get through. Meanwhile, “seven colours” is calling – that special festive meal that’s never complete without butternut and creamed spinach. To give your meal an edge, I wanted to share a different way for you to serve these favourites.
