Method

  • Peel and quarter large apples; cook with water and ½ c. sugar until soft (about 35 minutes). Put through sieve; add butter, lemon juice, spices and salt. Pour into pie shell.
  • Peel small apples; slice thinly lengthwise. Arrange in spiral starting at center of pie; sprinkle with 1 tblsp. sugar.
  • Bake in hot oven
