We prefer to eat sweet things for snacks. Traditional sweets compete with Western-inspired cakes called yougashi. Dorayaki: filled pancakes. Mitsumame: fruit, agar-agar and beans in syrup. Daifuku-mochi: stuffed rice cakes. Shortcake: Japanese strawberry shortcake. Roll cake: a swiss roll-type cake. Chiffon cake: a very light cake. Paradoxically, Japanese sweets are very dense and sweet, but Western-style cakes are expected to be extremely light.
