Everyone has a special fondness for cookies. They make children out of us at any age. Some like them snappy, others soft and chewy. Our philosophy is the more the merrier, and to us a ribbon-trimmed basket—filled with all shapes, sizes, and styles of cookies—seems like an invitation for fun! On a party buffet table, as a gift, or just on the sideboard when friends come to call, it’s the nicest way we know to present cookies. If you are making batches of different kinds of cookie for a basket, remember that the most dazzling statement is made by clustering the same kinds of cookie together—lushly and abundantly. This gives the basket a sense of style and importance. But you certainly don’t have to wait to make these cookies all at once. Each of the following recipes, on its own, will satisfy even the most discerning sweet tooth and bring smiles all around.
