Barry C Smith is a professor of philosophy and director of the Institute of Philosophy at the University of London’s School of Advanced Study. He is the founding director of the Centre for the Study of the Senses, and editor of Questions of Taste: the philosophy of wine, Oxford University Press 2007). He publishes both theoretical and experimental papers, and has written for Nature, Flavour and Food Quality and Preference on taste and smell and the multisensory perception of flavour. He has worked with leading chefs and served as a consultant to the food and drinks industry. He writes a wine column for Prospect Magazine and regularly contributes to The World of Fine Wine. He is a frequent broadcaster and has appeared as a flavor expert on BBC One’s Masterchef. In 2010, he wrote and presented a four-part BBC World Service radio series, The Mysteries of the Brain.
