Roses began their slow journey to the West in the third century bce, when they appeared in the botanical garden of Aristotle, in Athens. They had been sent from Persia, along with other specimen plants that might prove useful to medicine, by Alexander. The conqueror, once a pupil of Aristotle, was always interested in the flora and fauna of the countries that fell to him.
